Faderghost – Everyone assumed the first demo of Lights & Laughter (One More Time) had come from Riff. The hook was enormous, the uplift had absolutely no shame, and nobody could find the part where it was supposed to become tasteful. Then Faderghost opened the session and asked why they were looking at him like that. He hadn’t been brought in to fix it. He’d started it. Apparently, somewhere beneath the old punk stories and years of keeping other people’s shows upright, Faderghost had retained a completely unironic affection for Eurodance: huge melodies, immediate choruses, and the particular confidence of a song that believes “one more time” is a perfectly adequate reason to continue. When the others started treating it as a period-piece joke, he stopped them. The excess could be funny. The affection wasn’t. He approached it with the same ears he brings to a difficult live mix—keeping the kick grounded, giving the bright layers room, and letting the arrangement breathe before sending everything back over the top. Except this time, he wasn’t there to persuade anyone to remove the ridiculous part. He was there to make sure the ridiculous part landed. The bigger the final return became, the less interested he was in apologizing for it. For once, there was no backstage crisis to document and no exhausted worker to explain. He just wanted a room full of people to have a very good time. Someone called it a guilty pleasure. Faderghost looked up from the desk. “I’m not guilty. Turn it up.”
